Introduction to Warsaw’s Architecture with Aleksandra Kędziorek
23.10
10:30 – 11:15 | Meeting with the Award-Winning Architects of “Storm” Park
Meeting the architects (parking bay near Bartycka opposite Castorama) behind the Park beneath the Warsaw Uprising Mound, an award-winning project that took home the prestigious Landezine International Landscape Award (LILA) and are finalists of The European Prize for Urban Public Space. Exclusive insights into the design concept and its impact on the urban landscape.
The Warsaw Uprising Mound is a former landfill of post-World War II rubble from Warsaw, which, left unused, naturally became overgrown with wild, ruderal forest. A year ago, it was transformed into a public park, combining a tribute to history, an innovative approach to Fourth Nature, and aspects of circular construction using rubble excavated from the site. During the walk, we will see historical examples of the reuse of rubble in the city’s reconstruction, modern rubble-concrete walls implanted with moss spores, a park designed in harmony with natural succession, and a neighbourhood pocket forest planted using Akira Miyawaki’s method. The design by topoScape and Archigrest has won many national and international awards. We will be guided by some of the authors – landscape architect Magdalena Wnęka and architect Maciej Kaufman.
11:30 – 12:30 | River Walk and Urban Design Conversations Stroll along the scenic Vistula River with Aleksandra Kędziorek. Starting point at the Poniatówka beach, walk 15 minutes through the greenery to the Świętokrzyski Bridge, then across the Świętokrzyski Bridge to the boulevards and there reach the footbridge, enter the footbridge, and sit halfway on the benches overlooking the Old Town.Followed by a discussion with Malgorzata Dembowska, Architect/Associate Partner at WXCA Studio, who led the idea of Warsaw’s new cyclist/pedestrian bridge—a bold urban intervention. She will share its history and urban context, highlighting how her master’s thesis helped bring attention to this west-east route. Despite initial challenges, a grassroots movement involving residents, activists, and institutions led to a significant social campaign and an international competition, eventually making the project a reality.
15:30 – 17:30 | WXCA Studio Meeting – The Citadel of MuseumsDrive up to the Dymińska Gate to meet WXCA studio (Paweł Grodzicki, Katarzyna Billik, Bogumiła Chewińska and Bartek Jankowski) and its CEO and lead architect – Marta Sękulska-Wrońska.
